Disability Care Providers Urge Tivity Records to Guarantee All Functions Match

The Disability Service Australia is pleased to present the Annual Credit Report to the Minister for Employment, the Secretary of State and other relevant government and industry groups. This year’s report covers the period from July to September 2020. In this time the ASD has introduced the stakeholders using a number of report topics they can consider in preparation for the upcoming legislative changes. These include the launching of the National Accident Compensation Program (NACC), the creation of the Disabilities Discrimination Act (DDA) and measures to implement the National Disability Insurance (NDI). The seminar was also designed to provide an opportunity for companies, organisations and government agencies to engage in one-on-one talks about the impacts of the legislative changes and how these impacts may affect their workers and clients.

The first topic that has been increased at the end of this three-day seminar was that the effects of the NACC on the role of the disability centre. Associate Professor Belinda Linden in the University of New South Wales has been asked to conduct a clinical research examining how the NACC impacts upon the expert behaviour and work output of a clinical nurse. Her findings revealed that although there was a little decrease in quality of work as a result of the higher workload there wasn’t any significant impact on the quality of life of the sufferers. The results of the clinical study are in accordance with the results of the NACC assessment.

Another topic which was covered at the close of the day was that the impact of the DDA to the role of the handicap centre in providing personal care services. This was conducted by Associate Professor Belinda Linden from the University of New South Wales. As with the NACC, there was no proof of a reduction in quality of care provided by the centers. Following the release of this 2020 NACC report, the Australian Government announced that an independent advisor would be appointed to perform disability studies into health care and other areas of public sector reform. The adviser will coordinate research and report back to the authorities. This usually means that the research can be done from inside the government , but are also independent of it. This is great news, as I have always been a keen supporter of disability studies and so are delighted that this independent expert will be doing the work.

Following the release of the NACC report, I had been really pleased to learn that the recently appointed disability adviser is going to be somebody who’s both disabled and a female. As someone who operates in the medical industry (albeit in a different capacity), I understand firsthand the barriers that women can face when seeking to function in a male dominated environment. For me, this is just another illustration of why we need more women in leadership roles, so we can guarantee that equality of opportunity remains a reality for everybody. Reaching this level of equality at the workplace will go a very long way to ensuring everyone gets access to the health and disability support that they require, no matter what their disability is.\

Another benefit of This appointment of Dr Kate Edwards as the Acting Assistant Director for the Disability Centre was the Consultation of another woman with a Handicap, Associate Professor Kate Edwards. She’ll be joining the faculty as a lecturer at the Australian National University, focusing on the social impact of disability policies. In her role, she’ll ensure that the Centre receives full funding for the projects and activities. It’s good that the government is doing everything it can to ensure it is still prosperous, and this is another step in this direction.

Following the announcement of the appointment of Dr EdwardsI was delighted to Find out that the Government had selected another Girl with a disability, Associate Professoressessie Emmerson in the University of Wollongong to take the role of Senior Clinical Officer. This proves that the Government is fully aware of the problems faced by many men and women that are unable to work and the stigma attached to it. Additionally, it shows that they want to make sure that the possibilities available to individuals with disabilities are as open as possible. Becoming a senior medical officer is a privilege and one that come with certain responsibilities, such as ensuring the quality of patient care in the centre’s wings, in addition to ensuring that the Centre follows recommended practises in its day to day activities. There are also other areas that she is going to be accountable for, such as coping with policies and strategies which deal with issues surrounding individuals who have a handicap.

After reading all the media coverage, it seems clear to me that the Minister for Social Services, Tivity Records, must have understood about Patricia’s appointment for several weeks. However, one needs to inquire whether she picked the ideal individual to represent the Centre? The decision to appoint Ms Santsos was met with cautious optimism from the disability sector, even though quite a few individuals with disabilities voiced their fear that the move could set back disability support for vulnerable men and women. I am afraid that this is a scenario that we are very likely to see continue in the future, and while Ms Santsos may be able to overcome the stigma surrounding the role of a senior medical officer, I don’t think it is probable that numerous individuals suffering from mental illness may find her useful.
